Why do people think we need it?<\/h2>\n

Heterosexual pride day, often referred to as straight pride, has been around for many decades. It grew in the 80s and 90s when other pride events, particularly those for the LGBT community, became popular. Marches and parades began in the 90s, and while it might have started out innocently enough, it seems to have grown a great deal.<\/p>\n

In fact, for many, it is a hugely controversial topic. Some see it as simply a reaction to the fact that the LGBT community, and many other communities, have their own pride events to celebrate who they are.<\/p>\n

A lot of people seem to have the mentality that, “if other people have pride, why can’t we?” <\/strong>and has just snowballed from there. We have Gay Pride, so why not Straight Pride? We have Black History Month, so why not White History Month? They feel that it is only fair to be able to have their own day to celebrate their heterosexuality. If they aren’t allowed to celebrate it, why should the LGBT community get their own events throughout the world?<\/p>\n

Why we really celebrate pride<\/h2>\n

The many pride events that take place around the world each year are incredible. If you have never been to one, you should, simply to see what it is like. It is a chance for many to celebrate who they are, without fear of being attacked for it. They want the chance to live and go about their daily business without suffering for it.<\/p>\n

One user on Twitter explained why we celebrate quite nicely, sharing a picture with the following quote: “LGBT Pride was not born from a need to celebrate being LGBT, but from our right to live our lives free from persecution. So instead of wondering why there isn’t a straight pride movement, be thankful you don’t need one<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

Pride gives people the chance to alert others to the many issues they still face. There are still plenty of countries around the world where gay people cannot marry, adopt, or even give blood. It is seen as wrong.<\/p>\n

This is why they have pride event<\/strong>s: to alert the rest of the world to their struggles and to have somewhere they can be themselves without suffering for it.<\/p>\n

The fact that there is a heterosexual pride day out there wasn’t really a big deal. No-one was paying attention to it, as we can see from a Heterosexual Parade<\/a> last year that was attended by a grand total of one. That’s right. One person marched to show how proud they are to be a heterosexual.<\/p>\n

This might seem to make it pretty clear what people think about straight pride, but it seems that someone thought it would be an excellent idea to talk about the subject on Twitter. And so, the hashtag #HeterosexualPrideDay<\/a> began to trend.<\/p>\n

The internet reacted in a HUGE way, and a lot of the tweets showed just how ridiculous the idea of having a straight pride event is. One man said “solidarity with my straight friends who to this day can be jailed in approximately 0 countries for their sexuality”, highlighting the fact that being heterosexual will not land you in prison… but being gay can.<\/p>\n

And it wasn’t just on Twitter that people started to go mad about it. Forums became crazy, with one user saying that they “think it’s disgusting the way they’re in everybody’s faces about it. Just like, do it in the privacy of your own home<\/strong>“. This is one of the many arguments that gay people have to face every day.<\/p>\n

Do we need heterosexual pride day?<\/h2>\n

It is really fascinating to see the reaction online, especially because a number of those reacting are straight people. They don’t see why they would need a heterosexual pride day, and honestly, neither do I<\/strong>. Being straight, for me, has never been an issue in my life. It hasn’t caused me any issues. As the people online have been pointing out all day, being a straight person means I can get married and give blood without issue.<\/p>\n

However, there are still those out there who seem to believe that we do need the day. They keep quoting “love is love”, #lovewins, and talking about equality.<\/p>\n
