Newcastle upon Tyne (known locally as Newcastle) is a city and metropolitan borough of Tyne and Wear, in North East England. The name Newcastle comes from a  castle built in 1080, by Robert II, Duke of Normandy who was the eldest son of William the Conqueror.

From 1530, a royal act restricted all shipments of coal from Tyneside to Newcastle Quayside, giving Newcastle a monopoly. This monopoly lasted a long time and helped Newcastle prosper and develop into a major town. It also had a negative effect on near-neighbours Sunderland, causing a Tyneside an Wearside rivalry that exists to this today. 

By the 19th century, shipbuilding and heavy engineering were central to Newcastle's prosperity. The city was a powerhouse in the Industrial Revolution.

The Tyne Bridge is a through arch bridge over the River Tyne and is generally considered Newcastle's most famous landmark. The bridge was officially opened in October 1928 by King George V.

Newcastle has been the home to a number of different musicians over the years. These include The Animals, Sting, Brian Ferry, Dire Straits and more recently, Maximo Park.

The city's also has a major railway station. Newcatle Central Station is the principle stop on the East Coast Main Line and Cross Country Route. It was opened in 1850 by Queen Victoria.

Newcastle has three main bus companies providing services in the city. These are Arriva North East, Go North East and Stagecoach North East. The two main bus stations in the city are Haymarket bus station and Eldon bus station.

The city is home to a major airport. Newcastle International Airport is located around 6 miles from the city centre, on the northern outskirts of the city near Ponteland.

Newcastle has a strong footballing tradition. Newcastle United have been based at St James' Park since they were formed in 1892. They currently play in the English Premier League.
