“Oh My God!”: Sex Makes You More Religious!

A woman having an intense orgasm in bed

How many times have you been in bed, really enjoying yourself in the heat of the moment, only to find that your orgasm comes and you start talking to a god that you don’t believe in? It happens to pretty much everyone, where we start shouting “oh my God!” in the middle of sex. We suddenly seem to become religious just as our orgasm hits.

This isn’t something that only a handful of people do. In fact, most people start talking to god when they are having sex. We might think that this is just something we say, but a recent study has suggested that it might be something more than that.

Apparently, the more sex you have, the more likely you are to be religious and believe in God. Or at least, that is what the latest research seems to suggest. But is it true? We take a look at the study and its implications on the XEscorts blog.

“Oh my God!”

Sex feels incredible when you get it oh-so-right. Personally, I love it when sex gets a little loud… when your partner just can’t hold it in. They want to scream for all to hear, and it is a huge turn on to know that you are the reason they cannot resist getting more and more vocal.

One thing that a lot of people find is that they or their partner might suddenly start saying “oh God” or “oh my God” in the middle of sex… even if they aren’t religious, it is something that a lot of people say in the heat of the moment… but why, and does it mean we might be more religious than we previously thought?

The study

Duke University seemed to believe that the link between the number of us crying “oh my God” and sex was stronger than we might believe. They felt that many people were actually more likely to follow a religion or believing in a higher power all because of sex.

Sure, we might laugh and think that the idea is pretty amusing, but they released the results, and the scientists involved in the study have suggested that “hormones released while having sex can increase spirituality and belief in God”.

What is responsible?

The research team, based in North Carolina, decided to see if boosting the levels of oxytocin in middle-aged men made any difference whatsoever to them. Oxytocin is responsible for a number of different things, and is believed to promote things like trust, altruism, and empathy.

Upon boosting the levels, the researchers found that a number of the participants reported spirituality, regardless of whether they had said that they followed a religion or not. For whatever reason, the drug seemed to make a number of the participants feel more religious.

Religious sex

One of the researchers, Patty Van Cappallen, spoke about the fact that sex and religion have always been close: “spirituality and meditation have each been linked to health and well-being in previous research”, and that “oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe”.

Since this hormone is released during sex, it seems that you might be closer to God with each and every orgasm than you previously thought!

Is there really a link?

So the study seems to have sold some people on the idea that, the more sex you have, the more religious you might be… but is this really the case? Unsurprisingly, it is being pretty heavily debated by a number of different people around the world… and even the researchers are urging people not to jump to conclusions.

“We were interested in understand biological factors that may enhance those spiritual experiences. Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs.” Patty Van Cappellen said when interviewed. The key word there is, of course, “appears”. She also points out that “spirituality is complex and affected by many factors”, and so we shouldn’t assume that having amazing and mind-blowing sex will instantly make you religious.

Your thoughts on religion and sex

I have been guilty of saying the G-word during sex. When things get intense and fun, it is easy to let the word slip out… but does sex actually make you more religious? I am not convinced.

What do you think? Is saying “oh God” in bed just something that people say, or is there really something behind it? Is it a case of having more sex bringing you closer to a higher power, or is it all just a coincidence? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment in the box below.
